People remember the first and last items in a series best, and the middle worst. That U-shaped curve — primacy at the start, recency at the end — is why the most important navigation items belong at the two ends of a menu, and why the last thing a flow says lingers longest.
The effect comes from Hermann Ebbinghaus, the German psychologist who in the 1880s ran the first rigorous experiments on memory — famously memorising long lists of nonsense syllables on himself. He found recall depended on position: the first items had time to rehearse into long-term memory (primacy) and the last were still fresh in short-term memory (recency), leaving a dip in the middle. The same curve shapes how users remember any ordered interface.

Key actions (home/logo at the start, account/cart at the end) sit where recall is strongest; secondary items go in the soft middle.
The opening promise and the closing call-to-action are remembered far more than the middle steps.
Put must-see options first and last; the items buried in the middle are the ones users forget.
