Elements placed close together are perceived as a group, even without borders, boxes, or shared colour. Spacing alone tells users what belongs with what — which is why a label sits tight to its input and unrelated sections get breathing room. Get proximity wrong and a form feels like confetti; get it right and structure appears for free.
Proximity is one of the grouping laws from Gestalt psychology, founded by Max Wertheimer in his 1912 paper on apparent motion and developed with Koffka and Köhler through the 1920s. 'Gestalt' means 'unified whole', and the movement's core insight — that the whole is other than the sum of its parts — came from noticing that the mind automatically organises separate marks into groups based on how they're arranged in space. Long before screens, typesetters and mapmakers relied on the same instinct: things set near each other read as belonging together.
