Parkinson's Law

Work expands to fill the time available for its completion — and tasks balloon to fill whatever room the interface gives them. Constraints, defaults and autofill shrink the container so the task shrinks with it.
Where it comes from
Naval historian Cyril Northcote Parkinson opened a 1955 Economist essay with the line "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion," drawn from his years watching the British Civil Service grow regardless of workload — his example was an elderly lady taking a full day to send a postcard a busy person mails in three minutes. The cure is the same in bureaucracy and forms: shrink the container.

- Checkout autofill
Address lookup + saved cards collapse a 5-minute form into 20 seconds; given 12 fields, users will spend 12 fields of effort.
- Meeting schedulers
Tools defaulting to 25-minute slots end meetings that a 60-minute default would have inflated.

Twitter proved a hard cap doesn't kill expression — it kills padding.
