Dark Patterns · principle
A free trial or discounted period that silently converts into recurring charges — card collected up front, no reminder before billing, cancellation hidden or delayed. The CCPA (2023) calls it the 'subscription trap'. Continuity itself isn't dark; the darkness is monetising the user's forgetting instead of their consent.
Columbia House mailed '12 records for a penny' in 1955 — with a club membership that kept shipping records-you-must-return-or-pay, a negative-option scheme so effective it took US regulators decades to corner. The digital free trial with silent renewal is the same machine with lower postage. Brignull catalogued it in 2010; the FTC's click-to-cancel rule and India's CCPA (2023) now name it in law.

If the business model needs you to forget, it isn't a trial — it's a delayed charge.
US regulators now require cancelling to be as easy as subscribing — the roach motel's billing cousin.
'Your trial ends in 3 days' emails with one-tap cancel: continuity by fresh consent.
