Elements that share a visible boundary — a card, a panel, a background tint — are perceived as one group, even overriding proximity. Drawing a region around things is the strongest, cheapest way to say "these belong together."
Psychologist Stephen Palmer described common region in 1992, extending the classic Gestalt principles from 1920s Berlin. His experiments showed that a simple drawn boundary beats even distance: two dots inside one box feel more related than two dots sitting close together across a line. Fences, rooms and plates taught our brains this long before interfaces did — things inside the same container are one thing.
