Given fragments, the mind completes the whole: we see a full circle in a dashed outline and a panda in a few black patches. Interfaces exploit this to say more with less ink — and to hint that there's more content beyond the edge.
Another 1920s Berlin Gestalt finding: Wertheimer and Koffka showed that perception fills gaps to produce stable, complete objects. Evolution favoured it — an animal glimpsed through foliage is still recognised as a whole animal. Designers inherited a brain that finishes drawings for free, so a suggestion of a shape is often stronger (and cleaner) than the full shape.
